Visit Cawfields Roman Wall on Hadrian’s Wall — explore Roman ruins, stunning Northumberland scenery, and one of the most dramatic sections of the Wall.

Explore the Edge of an Empire

Perched high on the rugged slopes of Northumberland National Park, Cawfields Roman Wall is one of the most breathtaking stretches of Hadrian’s Wall, offering both ancient history and panoramic views.

Built nearly 2,000 years ago by Roman soldiers, this section of the Wall once guarded the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Today, it’s a peaceful spot where you can walk among the ruins and imagine life on the edge of Rome’s vast territory.

A Walk Through History

The Cawfields section of Hadrian’s Wall is famous for its dramatic setting. Here, the Wall climbs steep crags and dips through valleys, perfectly following the contours of the Whin Sill ridge — a volcanic rock formation that defines the landscape.

Cawfields is also home to Milecastle 42, one of the best-preserved small Roman fortlets along the Wall. Built around AD 122, it once housed a garrison of about 20–30 soldiers who guarded this remote frontier post.

You can still see the thick stone walls and layout of the gateway where Roman sentries once stood watch.

What to See at Cawfields
1. Milecastle 42

Explore the remains of this small fort, which offered accommodation, storage, and defence for Roman troops. Its commanding view over the landscape made it a perfect lookout point.

2. The Wall & Ditch

Walk alongside the ancient stones of Hadrian’s Wall itself and trace the Vallum, a deep earthwork that ran parallel to the Wall as an additional line of defence.

3. Cawfields Quarry

The old Cawfields Quarry offers a fascinating contrast between ancient and industrial history. Once a source of stone for local building, it’s now a scenic picnic area beside a tranquil lake — ideal for rest stops along the Hadrian’s Wall Path.

4. Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail

Cawfields sits along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, a UNESCO World Heritage hiking route stretching coast-to-coast from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway. It’s one of the most photogenic and accessible points along the trail.
