Royal Armouries Museum — The Story of Arms and Armour

A Museum Like No Other

Standing proudly on Leeds Dock, the Royal Armouries Museum is one of the most dynamic museums in the UK — home to Britain’s national collection of arms, armour, and military treasures.

With over 70,000 artefacts, interactive displays, and live demonstrations, it brings to life the stories of battle, bravery, and innovation that shaped human history.

Free to enter and open all year, it’s one of Yorkshire’s must-see destinations.

A Legacy of Power and Craftsmanship

The Royal Armouries’ origins date back to the Tower of London, where the monarchy first stored arms and armour over 600 years ago.

In 1996, the Leeds museum opened as the new home for the national collection, expanding access to visitors from around the world.

Today, it explores how weapons and warfare have influenced art, technology, and society — from medieval tournaments to modern conflicts.

Exploring the Royal Armouries Museum
1. The Tournament Gallery

Step into the pageantry of medieval jousting, complete with shining suits of armour, lances, and horses’ barding.
The highlight? A full-sized reconstruction of Henry VIII’s jousting armour, one of the finest ever made.

2. The War Gallery

This gallery covers the evolution of warfare — from ancient swords and muskets to tanks and modern firearms.
In addition, the display includes artefacts from world wars and conflicts across Europe, Asia, and beyond.

3. The Oriental Gallery

A dazzling collection of arms and armour from India, Japan, and the Islamic world, including samurai swords, Persian helmets, and Mughal daggers.

4. The Hunting and Self-Defence Galleries

These spaces explore how weapons were used for protection, sport, and prestige, showing elegant duelling pistols, ornate hunting rifles, and ceremonial blades.

5. The Live Demonstrations

Throughout the year, live combat and jousting events take place in the Tiltyard, recreating the spectacle and skill of medieval tournaments — a unique experience in the UK.
