An Ancient Tomb Above the Cornish Coast

Perched dramatically on the cliffs near St Just, Ballowall Barrow is one of the most intriguing Bronze Age burial monuments in Britain. Dating back over 3,000 years, this chambered cairn combines prehistoric mystery with breathtaking coastal scenery.

Also known as Carn Gluze Barrow, the site reveals multiple layers of ancient construction — a rare chance to see how burial traditions evolved over centuries. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of Cornwall’s deep prehistoric roots and its people’s enduring connection to the land and sea.

The History of Ballowall Barrow

Ballowall Barrow dates from the Early Bronze Age (around 2000–1500 BC) and was used as a burial and ritual site by local communities. Its design includes a central chamber, stone cists, and a large outer cairn, built from local granite and earth.

Excavated in the 19th century by William Copeland Borlase, the site revealed cremated human remains, pottery fragments, and bronze tools. Interestingly, Borlase’s reconstruction — though well-intentioned — partially altered the original layout, giving the barrow its current multi-chambered appearance.

Despite these changes, Ballowall remains one of the best-preserved Bronze Age monuments in Cornwall and an important record of ancient funerary practices.

Exploring Ballowall Barrow
1. The Central Chamber

At the heart of the monument lies a stone-lined central chamber where cremated remains were likely placed. From here, passageways lead to smaller side chambers once used for additional burials or offerings.

2. The Outer Cairn

The barrow’s outer ring of stones and surrounding cairn form an impressive circle roughly 20 metres wide. Standing within it, visitors can sense the scale of the ancient monument and the effort it took to build.

3. The Clifftop Views

Set high above the Atlantic Ocean, the site offers spectacular views toward Cape Cornwall and the Scilly Isles on clear days. The sweeping landscape enhances the site’s atmosphere — peaceful yet powerful.

The Mystery and Meaning

Archaeologists believe that sites like Ballowall Barrow were not just tombs but also ritual centres where communities honoured their ancestors. The circular layout, aligned with the surrounding landscape, may have symbolised the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Moreover, the barrow’s position on a windswept headland suggests it was deliberately placed for visibility — a sacred landmark linking the living and the dead. Even today, visitors describe a unique sense of energy and solitude when standing within its stone walls.
