Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal — A Masterpiece of History and Landscape

A UNESCO Treasure in the Heart of Yorkshire

Set in a peaceful valley near Ripon, Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden form one of England’s greatest historic landscapes. Combining medieval devotion with Georgian design, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a unique journey through 800 years of art, architecture, and nature.

From the haunting beauty of the abbey ruins to the formal water gardens and roaming deer, it’s a place where history feels truly alive.

A Tale of Faith and Transformation

Founded in 1132 by thirteen Benedictine monks seeking a simpler life, Fountains Abbey became one of the richest Cistercian monasteries in Europe. The monks built an immense church, mills, and workshops along the River Skell, creating a self-sufficient community of prayer and labour.

However, like many monasteries, it was dissolved in 1539 by order of Henry VIII. The once-thriving abbey fell into ruin — until the 18th century, when the Studley Royal estate was designed around it, turning the valley into a romantic landscape masterpiece.

Today, visitors can explore both — a rare union of medieval faith and Georgian vision, preserved in perfect harmony.

Exploring Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal
1. The Abbey Ruins

The vast Fountains Abbey ruins are among the most complete in Britain. Walk through the soaring nave, cloisters, and chapter house to feel the scale of monastic life.
In addition, the gentle sound of the River Skell adds a natural soundtrack to your journey through history.

2. Studley Royal Water Garden

Created in the 1700s by John and William Aislabie, the water garden is a triumph of Georgian landscaping. Reflecting pools, classical statues, and wooded paths lead to breathtaking views of the abbey framed perfectly in the distance.
Therefore, this unique composition earned the site its UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986.

3. Studley Royal Deer Park

Surrounding the gardens is the Studley Royal Deer Park, home to more than 300 red, fallow, and sika deer. Wander the open parkland to spot wildlife, ancient oaks, and sweeping vistas of the valley.

4. St Mary’s Church

At the edge of the park stands St Mary’s Church, Studley Royal, an extraordinary Gothic Revival masterpiece by William Burges — a must-see for its stained glass and ornate design.
