One of England’s Finest Mansions

Just outside Saffron Walden in Essex, the magnificent Audley End House & Gardens stands as one of England’s finest Jacobean mansions. Built in the early 17th century, it was once so vast that it rivalled a royal palace.

Today, the house welcomes visitors with its lavish staterooms, beautiful gardens, and rich history — from royal visits to wartime service. Managed by English Heritage, it remains a must-see destination for lovers of architecture, art, and landscape design.

The History of Audley End

The estate began as a Benedictine monastery before being transformed into a Tudor mansion by Thomas Audley, Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor. His grandson, Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, later rebuilt it in 1605–1614, creating a house so opulent it was said to be “fit for a king.”

However, its size proved costly. Over time, sections were demolished to reduce expenses, leaving behind the still-impressive central block that stands today. Despite this, Audley End has hosted royalty, including Charles II, who briefly owned the property.

Moreover, the house played a crucial role during World War II, serving as headquarters for the Polish Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE).

Exploring Audley End House & Gardens
1. The State Rooms

Step inside to explore lavish 18th-century interiors, restored to their former glory. Highlights include the Great Hall, saloon, and drawing rooms, decorated with portraits and fine furnishings from generations of the Howard and Neville families.

2. The Servants’ Wing

The Victorian Servants’ Wing offers a fascinating look at life below stairs. Walk through the kitchen, laundry, and dairy, where staff worked tirelessly to keep the great household running.

3. The Gardens and Landscape

Designed by Capability Brown in the 18th century, the gardens feature sweeping lawns, ornamental lakes, and elegant bridges. The organic kitchen garden still produces fruit and vegetables, just as it did centuries ago.

The Architecture of a Jacobean Masterpiece

Audley End is celebrated for its Jacobean symmetry, tall windows, and elaborate stonework. Its façade, with classical columns and gables, blends Renaissance inspiration with English grandeur.

Inside, the craftsmanship is exquisite — from intricate plaster ceilings to oak panelling and marble fireplaces. The result is a perfect blend of power, artistry, and opulence that defines early 17th-century architecture.
